the war within
giving into the desires of our flesh
provides pleasure and comfort
slow sensualities
exhilarating highs
that escaping drunkenness
delightful foods
appeasing our hunger
taking an indulging bite
just feels
so dang good
quenching our mortal thirst
experiencing anger driven outbursts
these acts make us human
and so the internal war begins:
we are only here once,
shouldn’t we revel in our human experience?
we won’t be on this earth forever
might as well enjoy it while we have it?
this is all we know
this is all we feel
this is all we fathom
with finite minds –
minds that God himself made
our needs he placed
specifically in these bodies
specifically in this earthly space
…what are we supposed to do?
but deep down
we can all feel something urging us
to break free from all temptation
to cast off every bind
and leave sinful habits behind
i believe God put us here for a reason
we can all sense we have a spirit –
a spirit that will live on
we are all constantly searching –
searching for fulfillment
that only God can provide
the things pleasing to our bodies
are only temporary
and feels wrong at our cores
like premarital sex and drunkenness
getting high and being promiscuous
flesh versus soul, i swear,
is the deadliest of deadly wars
